Some Say Shiraz, We Say Syrah. All red wine lovers are often confused by the difference between Shiraz vs Syrah. The fact of the matter is, they’re both made from the same grapes, it’s simply the style of wine and winemaking that differs. While the “New-World” character of shiraz is associated with jammy fruit flavours and high alcohol, the traditionalist “Old-World” style of Syrah, thrives in Benguela Cove’s cool-climate Walker Bay vineyards, reflects the more elegant, peppery, and floral wines that this varietal can produce.

Because of Benguela Cove’s setting and the approach of the wine team, our Syrah story stretches far and wide. We have a beautiful variety to offer for the different palates.
Benguela Cove has erected its own lighthouse – the beacon that historically guided ships to safety around the Cape – an ode to this marginal climate close to the ocean. Stormy winds, once a threat to ships en route to the Cape, now cool the vines anchored in the terroir. Our Lighthouse Collection Syrah dances on the pallet with flavours of delicious dark fruit, rich perfume and a savoury gloss with hints of pepper. Young yet forthcoming, it is evident the winemaker followed a hands-off approach not to let the oak overpower the honest essence of this wine.
Dedicated to the craft of allowing each wine to tell its own story, only estate-grown grapes are used to encapsulate this quintessential cool climate. The Estate Syrah consists of the aromas of rosemary and fynbos, a rich perfume with hints of pepper spice. Juicy ripe tannins add structure to the wine with a youthful freshness to perch the bold fruit.
The Vinography Range represents a diary kept by both nature and the Benguela Cove Winery winemakers, combined to showcase the essence of the place. Every element, every nuance, every decision, from vines to wineries, helped tell a vintage story. This range serves as an ode to our journey to learn and discover vines planted in unused soil and continue our commitment to excellence.
